How to Choose the Best Shampoo for Oily Hair and Scalp?

Today’s post is devoted to shampoos.

I’ve been struggling with overly oily hair since I can remember. At times it looked unfresh and flat a few hours after washing.

After months of attempting to restore the balance I came to a conclusion that doesn’t seem revelatory: a shampoo is the most important thing. If you choose the right one, the success is within your reach. So, it’s good to learn to choose the best shampoo for oily hair, and this is what you are going to learn by reading on.

Why is hair oily?

First things first, what are the most common causes of hair oiliness? Let me reveal a secret: in most cases, we are the wrongdoers.

Everything starts in a scalp where hair follicles are rooted. The look of hair depends on its condition. The scalp has hundreds of sebum glands responsible for the production of oil: an ingredient which naturally protects the skin and hair against loss of moisture.

The truth is that hair gets oily when the balance of the scalp is upset. This may be triggered by:

  • shampoos packed with SLS and SLES.
  • regular blow-drying with too hot airflow.
  • not clearing the scalp of product buildup.
  • “scalp training” and not washing the hair as often as necessary.
  • paradoxically, overwashing.

We often get stuck in a vicious circle because we keep cleansing and drying out oily hair, irritating the scalp and making it over-produce oil, and so we reach out for even stronger products…

Of course, the oiliness of hair may be caused by some health issues, hormonal imbalance or genes.

Shampoo that fixes oily hair!

A good shampoo helps us get out of this vicious circle, control the sebum glands and restore the scalp balance, so it’s good to put your mind to choosing one.

What is the best shampoo for oily hair?

Obviously the one that matches your hair. We need different things. Buy, test, observe your hair. Don’t score a product out because it isn’t a best-seller. Don’t stick to a product that fails. You need to keep searching and experimenting.

That is why I won’t recommend any brands or products. Let me tell you, though, what to look at while buying a shampoo for hair that tends to get oily.

1. ALL-NATURAL INGREDIENTS

The fewer the synthetics, the healthier the hair and scalp. The scalp is usually irritated by unnecessary additives like preservatives, aromas, colorants and washing agents such as SLES or SLS. They are justifiably called the allergy triggers so we should seek shampoos without them. Otherwise, the sebum glands try to prevent irritations by producing too much oil and leaving hair greasy.

2. MICELLAR FORMULATION

What to choose for clarifying the hair and scalp without causing irritations? Instead of SLS/SLES products, let’s pick micellar shampoos. Thanks to micelle-based formulas they perform brilliantly. Micelle molecules attract dirt and remove it without the irritating effect, dryness and trouble.

3. NATURAL CLEANSING AGENTS

If you’re facing a dilemma which shampoo for oily hair to pick, check products for additional cleansing substances. It’s a very good idea to try shampoos enriched with clay or activated carbon, or natural detoxifying agents that help clear the scalp with an extra conditioning effect.

4. ADDITIONAL CONDITIONING EFFECT

A good shampoo contains extra conditioning substances e.g. nourishing vitamins A and E, hyaluronic acid having natural hydrating properties, vegetable oils rich in omega acids and phytosterols (argan oil, jojoba oil, growth-boosting castor oil). If your shampoo merely cleans and doesn’t nourish the hair, it’s likely to leave the scalp and hair dry, not helping you get rid of the oiliness.
